NOVEMBER ~ DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2008

WORDS OF WISDOM

Don’t Worry About the Future

What you sow you reap. Don’t worry about the future don’t worry about the past. A great thinker said the past and the future are not even visible. But what is visible? The golden present. Think of the golden present; sow what is necessary, what is right. Sow good thoughts, sow good deeds, and I am sure you will sow good fruits. There is no question about it. What you do comes back to you. What you sow you reap. So do the right thing in the present, and don’t worry about the future. The people who worry about the future miss the present as well. You have something right now. You have something in your hand, something nice to eat; don’t think, “What will happen if I am hungry tomorrow?” By the time you find that out, someone will have snatched it from you. Always remember the golden present. Never miss it. A happier life is not given to you by someone else. Not even God can give you a happier life. Remember that. Happiness is in you. If you take care not to lose it, it is always there.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
We are all One in one sense; in another sense, we are many. If we realize this, our life will be happy and peaceful. We won‘t see people as different from us. That is meant by “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
~Sri Swami Satchidananda

WORDS OF WISDOM
Maintain Your Happiness
“How can you maintain your happiness always? Ask yourself why you are unhappy. Every time you are unhappy over something, the first thing to do is to analyze the cause. You will always find there is attachment in some area. If you don’t want to be unhappy, you will come to the conclusion, ‘Oh, I should not be attached to that. When I am attached, I feel unhappy.’ You may ask, ‘But what about people?’ You can be friendly, you can love them, but you should not be attached to them. There is a difference between attachment and love. Love means that I must think of your benefit first. Attachment means I think of my benefit first. “God bless you. Om Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi.”

In the spiritual life, All paths lead to the same place”

MAY - JUNE NEWSLETTER 2008

WORDS OF WISDOM

THERE IS NO SUPERIOR IN INFERIOR

In nature, every job is equally important. There is no superior or inferior work. If you feel comfortable with a job, and if you can perform it with joy, that’s your work. You can perform any work with joy if you know that every job is equally good. You lose your joy of doing things when you don’t understand the importance of them, when you compare your work with someone else’s work. There is no blue-collar work, white collar work.

If you want to see it that way, your legs are doing blue-collar work. Your head is doing white-collar work. Is it not so? Your blue-collar workers have to take the white-collar worker wherever it wants to go. We are the ones who create all the superiority/inferiority. The world needs everything. Every action is equally good. Do them all with joy.

“Yoga expands the mind by a slow process and by your own work, without external influence. Your will is developed gradually. It is like a fruit that takes its own time to ripen and become sweet. It becomes steady, not by any outside chemical force, not by a sudden pick-up but in its own time.” - Swami Satchidananda

WORDS OF WISDOM

EVOLUTION

People are at different levels of their evolution. They behave according to their nature. If someone hurts you, feel pity for him or her. If you can, help the person stop that behavior. Getting upset doesn’t bring any benefit to anybody.

On the other hand, if you harbor the hurt feeling, you are allowing the poison into your system. You accepted the hurt; it is affecting you. Suppose somebody used a bad word to abuse you. It is just a word. They didn’t hurt you, you got hurt by allowing that to come into your system

“Though we can't always see it at the time, if we look upon events with some perspective we see that things always happen for our best interests. We are being guided in a way better than we know ourselves.” - Swami Satchidananda

MAHASHIVARATRI

Mahashivaratri, Siva's great night, venerates Parashiva. Devotees of Siva consider it the most holy night of the year.

On Mahashivaratri we observe it both as a discipline and a festivity. It is celebrated by performing puja, meditating, intoning the names of Siva, singing His praise, and striving to realize the absolute truth. Make it the most important spiritual event of your life, remembering your goal, which is self -realization, the purpose of human birth. Climb to the top of Mount Kailash within yourself; experience the presence of Lord Siva within as your very Self. Come fill your heart and mind with thoughts of Siva.

On Sivaratri night we want to enjoy ourselves. The more joyous we are on the most sacred of nights, the closer we are to the Source of bliss and joy. So, be happy on Sivaratri. Sing with a full heart. Forget all the problems life brings. Forget all of the pains of the past and the not- yet-remembered future. Let Siva's presence fill you completely during this auspicious night.

Friday, March 7 7:00 – 10:00pm No Cost!

(Please be advised that there will be no Hatha class this evening). Traditionally Sivaratri is celebrated as an all night vigil. Though we are ending the major festivities at 10:00pm, some of us will be staying behind to chant and share stories on the greatness of realizing your true self. All are Welcome!

SPECIAL KIRTAN CHANTING CONCERT WITH ROBIN RENEE AND PARAM JOE ROSOLEN
“If Robin Renee were to start a religion all her own, it might well hold groupie Consciousness as its central tenet. She chases after the God/dess within with a reverence and fervor not unlike her passion for the music that moves her most-acts as disparate as Elvis Costello, Krishna Das, James Taylor, Gary Wilson, and Devo. Those in the know are realizing that Renee is worthy of just as much hot pursuit. Oh, and that religion? There’d be lots of yoga, a strong belief in cartoon physics, a little sexiness, and zero dogma. Such is the musical and magical world of Robin Renee. Her accessible tunes with a spiritual twist have forged her personal genre-Mantra Pop!”

Integral Yoga Institute has been charmed by her cd, Live Devotion, and is looking forward to her visit with us. Don’t miss the special showing in New Jersey. “One of the Garden State’s finest singer-songwriters”, Robin has shared the stage with prominent kirtanists” Krishna Das, Dave Stringer, and Wynee Paris. Extremely devotional and very upbeat, Robin Renee is sure to provide everyone with a most uplifting evening. Sharing the “stage” with her will be the popular drummer and percussionist, Param Joe Rosolen, who has devoted much of his life to sharing kirtan with many diverse groups. SATSANG WITH SWAMI KARUNANANDA: KARMA, EFFORT AND GRACE: DIVINE MYSTERY IN ACTION

The universe unfolds in an orderly way based on the grand Law of Causation known as karma. There is a clear pattern of cause and effect. Sometimes we can readily see this; at other times, the antecedent cause is hidden in the past. But it’s certain that sometime, somewhere, we did something to merit what unfolds in our life. In this workshop we will explore certain key questions:

How does karma begin?
Can we distinguish past karma from the new karma we are creating now?
Is it possible to transcend karma?
Can we overcome karma through willpower or personal effort?
Can prayer affect the outcome of a situation?
What is the role of divine grace?

Deeper understanding of these subtle principles will help us to go through life with a broader perspective, to make better choices, and to face challenges more skillfully. UPCOMING EVENTS

THE POWER OF SILENCE ( HATHA CLASS)

Experience the power of silence during a Yoga class. In this class you will be guided through the postures using only sound (talking will be minimal). This is done to create an atmosphere of silence to help the student direct their awareness deeper to their own internal silence. Through the power of silence we can relieve our cares, anxieties, our nerves are soothed, energy gained, and experience the peace within.
